Rolf Binder Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache 2010, Barossa Valley, South Australia, Australia: Smoky black fruit aromas on the nose; this is a full-bodied and brooding Australian red wine blend of 65% Shiraz, 25% Mataro (aka Mourvèdre) and 10% Grenache. Dark and deep with terrific concentration of flavour. Judicious use of oak gives this wine a lovely weave of smoke. Long finish. Pair with rack of lamb. Drink: 2013-2018. 90258 14% D 750 mL $28.95 Score: 91/100. February 7, 2015

Coopers Creek Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand: Grassy and herbal but not overly so in this zesty, well-respected New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Finishes with lime lift and zest. Even the acids are well balanced here. I smell vegetarian quiche. I'm hungry (and thirsty). Drink: 2013-2015. 957407 13% XD 750 mL $19.95 Score: 89/100.
