Hecht & Bannier 2012, Côtes Du Roussillon-Villages, Midi A.C., France: This is one of the most respected producers in the Roussillon region of southern France. This winery's vineyards are deeply influenced by the Mediterranean Sea, which also provide some of the oldest soils in France for the country. The wine is aged in large oak casks and demi muids (Languedoc traditional barrel of 600 litres) for 2 years. A full-bodied, chalky-dry red wine blend of Syrah and Grenache grapes, with Grenache adding extra plushness to the wine. Loads of blackberry, cassis, and other dark fruits and just enough toasty oak. Beautifully textured wine with a vivacious palate. This big red is a flagship wine for the Roussillon region. Good cellar candidate or pair with hearty meat dishes. There’s some balancing cedary notes and herbal flavours that prevent the wine from tasting flabby. Full-bodied and scrumptious. Principessa Gavia Gavi 2014, Piedmont D.O.C.G., Italy: Pure lemon sunshine in this zesty Italian white wine from Vigne Regali (Gavi)! Finishes crisply with notes of chives and lemon. The ancient story says that the Principessa Gavia, daughter of the King of the Franks, had a village and a wine named after her. Clean, crisp and refreshing with terrific mouth-watering acidity for seafood and salads. Medium-bodied layers of pleasure in this DOCG wine. This would also be a great aperitif.
