Falernia Gran Reserva Carmenère 2017, Elquí Valley, Chile: Falernia Gran Reserva 2017 Carmenère is produced from grapes sourced in the Elquí Valley from vines that are 550 metres above sea level living in rocky, sandy soils. The climate is semi-arid with a dramatic contrasts between night and day temperatures. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and undergoes a full malolactic fermentation prior to ageing in small American oak barrels for six months. A portion of the grapes are dried in appassimento style. Lovely on the nose with ripe blackberry, plum, cocoa aromas, medium-plus-bodied, dry and fruity on the palate with plum compote, cedar spice, dried fruit and cocoa flavours wrapped up in a bit of smoke.
