Lindemans Gentleman's Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2015, South Australia, Australia: A terrific, full-bodied Australian red wine made from the classic Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Aromas of cassis, black currant and wild blackberry. This is a special edition wine named in honour of Lindemans Winery founder Dr. Henry Lindeman, who in 1843, with his wife Eliza, planted the first vines in the Hunter Valley, just south of Sydney. I love the old-fashioned label that reminds me of a Victorian sepia toned catalogue featuring Uncle Bertram's Exlirir for What Ales Yee and corsets for the modern woman. Pair with roast beef and yorkshire pudding. Drink: 2017-2020. 461533 14% D 750 mL $17.95 Score: 92/100. January 8, 2017

14 Hands Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, Columbia Valley, Washington, United States: The horses on the label are a tribute to the wild horses that once roamed the Hose Heaven Hills wine region. They were approximately 14 hands tall: small but sturdy and strong, known for their unbridled strength and freedom. Aromas of coffee, mocha and spice as well as fleshy blackberry. The wine is aged in American oak barrels for 14 months and that that provide a succulently rich/sweet frame and carry the tannins to an excellent place of balance. The wine is very approachable. Pair with a rare steak. Drink: 2015-2021. 70573 13% XD 750 mL $18.95 Score: 90/100. March 18, 2017

Columbia Crest Winery Grand Estates Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Columbia Valley, Washington State, United States: The soils aren't heavy and rich in this wine region of Washington state; rather they're more like sand traps on a golf course so they don't retain water and make the vines work hard. That's a good thing and results in smaller, more flavourful grapes and wine. Also eastern Washington where these vineyards are located is the driest part of the state. It can be 19 degrees C and raining in Seattle (on the other side of the Cascade Mountains) but 35 degrees and dry here. As well it rains mostly in the winter when moisture doesn't bloat the grapes, which aren't growing at that time. Therefore the winemaker can control the amount of wine during the dry growing season so the wines develop the same intensity of flavour as warm climate wines but the cool nights preserve balance and freshness. This Cabernet features Old World flare and styling with New World fruit and power. Aromas of black fruit, mocha and vanilla spice. Pair this with prime rib. Drink: 2014-2020. 460154 13.50% D 750 mL $19.95 Score: 90/100. August 4, 2016
