Chateau Ste. Michelle Merlot 2014, Columbia Valley, Washington, United States: A blockbuster Washington Merlot from a strong vintage. Aromas of black cherry, spice and smoke. A splash of Syrah in this mostly Merlot wine adds a depth of black raspberry flavour and supple texture. Washington didn't suffer from the pylloxera root louse devastation so the vines are still planted on 100% vinifera rootstook and convey that typicity beautifully. Pair with grilled pork chops. Drink: 2014-2021. 486936 13.50% XD 750 mL  $21.95 Score: 93/100. September 5, 2017 Top Rated Red Wine. Full Review
H3 Columbia Crest Merlot 2013, Horse Heaven Hills, Washington State, United States: The difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures in this eastern Washington state wine region is the reason why Merlots like this one are terrific. In October, during the last weeks of the key ripening season before harvest the nighttime temperature can plummet from 35 degrees in the day to just 20 degrees at night which allows for ripening during the day but then the grapes stop in the night and preserve freshness and natural acidity. The great thing is that the grapes don't get over-ripe as in some warm climates where photosynthesis produces more sugar and therefore more alcohol. That's why Washington red wines are often a moderate 13% alcohol. This wine features aromas of dark spice, fleshy blackberry and smoke. Pair with roast beef. Drink: 2013-2019. 209874 14.50% D 750 mL  $22.95 Score: 92/100. January 27, 2017 Top Rated Red Wine. Best Beef Wine Full Review
Columbia Crest Winery Grand Estates Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Columbia Valley, Washington State, United States: The soils aren't heavy and rich in this wine region of Washington state; rather they're more like sand traps on a golf course so they don't retain water and make the vines work hard. That's a good thing and results in smaller, more flavourful grapes and wine. Also eastern Washington where these vineyards are located is the driest part of the state. It can be 19 degrees C and raining in Seattle (on the other side of the Cascade Mountains) but 35 degrees and dry here. As well it rains mostly in the winter when moisture doesn't bloat the grapes, which aren't growing at that time. Therefore the winemaker can control the amount of wine during the dry growing season so the wines develop the same intensity of flavour as warm climate wines but the cool nights preserve balance and freshness. This Cabernet features Old World flare and styling with New World fruit and power. Aromas of black fruit, mocha and vanilla spice. Pair this with prime rib. Drink: 2014-2020. 460154 13.50% D 750 mL  $19.95 Score: 90/100. August 4, 2016 Best Value Red Wine. Best Beef Wine Full Review
