Scattered Earth sports the ticket. The bus ticket, as South African winemakers call it. Located at the top of the neck, the ticket means the wine's validated by South Africa's Wine and Spirit Board (WSB) through the Wine of Origin (WO) system. The Integrity + Sustainability certification guarantees the authenticity of the product from the pressing to final bottling. It certifies the grapes' origin, the varietal (e.g.Cinsault), and the vintage.

The scattered earth ticket took me back to my English childhood to a small town in central Briton.

What took me back (and took a while to identify!) was of all things, a juicy, ripe note of Ribena! Yes, the formerly British-owned blackcurrant-based concentrated drink that used to be sold in the nubby glass bottles that mimicked blackberry fruit. But back to scattered earth.

It's a single varietal wine of Cinsault, a grape that hails from France' Southern Rhone. There, it's typically used in blends, usually with Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre known as GSM.

This wine shows lots of red fruit, namely strawberry and raspberry - and Ribena, of course - with some spice and an earth note, in a delicious, highly drinkable and affordable wine. It's a ruby shot through with a bit of purple, like a silk sari. With good acidity balancing it out, it's a food-friendly wine. At 3 g/l, it's extra-dry, ringing in at 14% a.b.v - but you'd never know the a.b.v. was that high from the taste.

It's July in a bottle or a South African Beaujolais, with the king protea, South Africa's national flower, on it's label.

Chill to just below room temperature before drinking. Pairs with meat-based stews or vegetarian salads.
