Reviews and Ratings

Alana L rated this wine as 92/100 with the following review:

Since I couldn’t be at Hinterland Wine Company in Prince Edward County yesterday for the ‘Meet the Makers’ event, I did the 2nd best thing today and cracked open (literally - love the blue wax seals!) a bottle of L’Imparfait Négociant Macération 2018 - the 1st offering from the 2nd vintage of the collaboration between Hinterland Wine Company, L’Imparfait Négociant and David McMillan. I loved last year’s iteration so was anxiously waiting for my delivery of the 2018 cuvée.

Biodynamic, harvested by hand, no fining or filtration and a long maceration blend of whole cluster skin-contact Savagnin (21 day maceration, spontaneous fermentation, 8 months in neutral barrels), Gewurztraminer (24 day maceration, spontaneous fermentation, 8 months in neutral barrel) and Chardonnay (whole cluster pressed, spontaneous fermentation, barrel fermented, neutral barrels) - the result is a perfect example of why natural wines are gaining such traction. Deep hay in colour, ‘pain brioché’ on the nose, extremely light effervescence, crisp acidity, wonderful texture and firmness to the taste and a palate of white grapes and subtle lychee (Savagnin blanc's grand stage is Jura after all where it yields sturdy, ample-bodied dry white wines and more notably is the variety behind ‘vin jaune’). As it warms a bit (strong recommendation to not serve this lovely wine too chilled in order to appreciate it entirely) it evolves to express an array of light smoke, slate and subtle fruit (peach, apple and lychee still). Expressive and unique.

Tasting notes aside though - the Coles notes version? A great wine for a lovely Sunday afternoon. Football game and snoozing dog on your feet optional.

Label art “pool hall “ is by the late David Doig.

There are very few people in the wine world who "get it" and Natalie is one of those who brings more fun to a buttoned-up and stodgy game.
