Mines to Vines
Today there are an estimated 110 million landmines lying in wait beneath the earth's surface in over 70 nations. Each year they maim or kill approximately 26,000 people, mostly women and children. The impact on victims, families, communities, and the land itself is devastating. Roots of Peace is working to implement a comprehensive and lasting solution-one that not only removes the mines, but also restores the land and livelihood of the local community through sustainable agricultural use. Grapes for Humanity
This Canadian-based group's objective is also to help the victims of landmines. They raise money by putting on wine tastings, wine dinners, wine auctions and other wine-related activities and to direct the proceeds of these events to those in immediate need. To make a donation:

Wine Auctions
There are many wine auctions in most cities throughout North America and Europe that raise funds for worthwhile causes such as food banks, artist communities and children's causes. For those in Ottawa, look under the articles tab of my web site and click on Wine Auctions. For event listings in Canada, check these wine magazines: Vines, Wine Access and Wine Tidings. In the U.S., Wine & Spirits, Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast. In the U.K., Decanter and Wine. You can donate wine to be auctioned - often for a tax deduction, or you can bid on mature wines no longer available in stores.
